Life at Monte Cristo

Imagine living in a house with spirits that still roam the halls even in death. This is the reality for the Ryan family who have turned their home into a fascinating museum for all to see.

On weekends, Lawrence Ryan (More commonly known as famous stunt man “Lawrence Legend”) takes visitors on ghost tours started by his dad, Reg Ryan, who had a passion for antiques and understood that the house he purchased with his wife Olive wasn’t quite right. Living on the property is an experience in itself, but to open your home to the public is a whole other ball game. The Ryan family shares their unique lifestyle with those who seek to delve into the paranormal.

Visitors to Monte Cristo will experience a one-of-a-kind tour of the house and museum, and learn about the fascinating history behind each piece on display. The Ryan family welcomes you to come and experience life at Monte Cristo, where the past meets the present, and the spirits that inhabit the house will leave you spellbound.

What does the goanna totem symbolize?

In many Aboriginal cultures, the goanna is a Creator spirit in Dreamtime stories.

The Wiradjuri People

The producers acknowledge the Wiradjuri people who are the traditional owners and custodians of the land in which the Monte Cristo Homestead is located and we pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

The Monte Cristo documentary is a powerful exploration of the complex and haunting history of the Monte Cristo homestead, one of Australia’s most haunted locations. At the heart of this story is the Wiradjuri people, whose cultural and historical significance cannot be overstated.

As producers of this documentary, we believe it is essential to share the story of Elizabeth Crawley, a Wiradjuri woman who was forced to deny her Indigenous heritage and pretend to be white to survive in colonial society.

We hope that our documentary will not only entertain and intrigue, but also inspire meaningful conversations and reflections on the importance of preserving and celebrating Indigenous cultures and histories. The Wiradjuri story is at the heart of the Monte Cristo documentary. It is a story that demands to be told, and the producers are honored to have the opportunity to share it with the world. Thank you for joining us on this journey.

The Ghosts

WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the following program may contain images and voices of deceased persons.

The original people who lived here are said to still roam the house and its grounds, with ten distinct spirits identified and many more rumored to exist. At the forefront of these spectral inhabitants is Elizabeth Carley, the original matron of the house. Legend has it that if you show disrespect towards Mrs. Crawley, she will make her presence known by making guests feel sick and uncomfortable, prompting them to leave the property. Despite the spooky reputation, the spirits of Monte Cristo Homestead have a strong attachment to the house and show no signs of leaving anytime soon. Our cameras caught strange paranormal phenomena that we are can’t wait to share when the series airs.
